3 ways to wear it: denim cut-offs

denim cutoffsMemorial Day has come and gone, and really it’s feeling more like July than May out there…which means it’s time to break out those shorts!!  We love finding pieces in our wardrobe that go with everything.  And we are pretty sure that denim cut-offs fit the bill!  As Angela mentioned in her interview, they are the “skinny jeans of summer”.  They allow you to wear all of your summer tops, from casual tanks to dressy blouses.  They can be found in a variety of lengths – so they really are for all ages!  Here are 3 easy ways to wear denim cut-offs this summer featuring these shorts from Madewell!

cleaning out your closet: our favorite tips

With the change of seasons we often find ourselves slammed with Closet ReStyles (formerly known as the Closet Clean-Up!  Because it’s not just “cleaning up” that we do to your closet…we ReStyle what you already have!).  And for good reason!  It’s a perfect time to reevaluate what you have, what you wear, and what you love.  We receive so many questions on how to clean out closets, so here is a little overview on how we do it.

IMG_0139

Step 1: ORGANIZE

Before we start talking through any pieces with our clients, we organize the closets by category.  We think about how we can best utilize the space in the closet and what makes the most sense when our client gets dressed in the mornings.  Often we like to put tops and jackets on the top bar and pants and skirts on the bottom, so she can visually see the outfit when she opens her closet door.  After we come up with a layout, we sort and organize each piece into its proper location.  TIP: Group casual and dressy next to each other – you know we love versatility and casual can be dressed up with a blazer and statement necklace, while dressy can be dressed down with boyfriend jeans and sandals!

So, the top bar of the closet would look something like this:

tops organizing

Then we’d do the same on the bottom row:

bottoms

Step 2: FILTER

Once everything is in its proper location, we can go through and talk about each piece.  We  will take each category OUT of the closet at this point so we can fully see each item, and we have our client try things on that she may be questioning.  Here are some examples of why we might DONATE items:

*The item is worn (shows signs of pilling, has small holes or tears, etc)

*The fit is off (fits change throughout the years – a few years ago tops were longer and slimmer, now the length is going back up and they have more of a loose/boxy fit.  What you loved a few years ago might feel strange today because the proportions are not current.  Also: our bodies seem to change 😉 ).

*It doesn’t fit the client’s current lifestyle (how many of us have old items that we used to wear for a phase of life we were in – old suits, maternity clothes, college t-shirts, etc.  It’s OK to let these items go!)

*The client doesn’t love it (we need to feel good in what we wear…and if you don’t feel good in it, it’s fine to let it go!)

IMG_0138

Step 3: CREATE OUTFITS

If the item makes the cut, we will discuss ways to wear the piece.  We’ll create casual outfits, dressy outfits, and photograph all combinations (on her phone!) so the client can easily reference ways to wear the item.  Don’t forget to include accessories in these pictures!  TIP: Hang up or store accessories IN YOUR CLOSET.  This will remind you to wear them!  (This actually goes for all clothes: the more you see in your closet, the more you will wear!  Items hidden away in drawers will be forgotten!)  Accessories take your outfit from casual to dressy, and can make or break your look!   Once outfits have been created and photographed, they go back into the closet.

IMG_0137

Step 4: SHOPPING LIST

As we place the items back into the closet, it will allow us to easily see what is needed to fill in any holes or trends that the client might be missing.  Here’s how we determine what goes onto your shopping list:

*Is there a specific item you often wear/love?  (Find a similar item in this season’s color or pattern!)

*Did we have to get rid of a lot of one category?  (Replace them!)

*Is there a trend you haven’t tried yet but really like?

*Are there any basics that you need updated?

Our clients can then take these lists with them when they’re out shopping and know specifically what to look for.  No impulse buys here – only things that will go with what she already has (in multiple ways!).

IMG_0152(1)

And that is our Closet ReStyle in a nutshell!  Of course it takes us about 3 hours to complete with our clients. 🙂  Often having a second (and third) set of eyes look at your items is helpful when cleaning out your closets because we have no sentimental attachments to items and can give you ideas that you hadn’t thought of before.

So try cleaning out your closet using our tips above…and if you need our help, just let us know!

Wedding Belles

Wedding Season is upon us!  That means putting on your party shoes and getting the chance to wear one (or more) of the amazing dresses out there this spring/summer.  It’s a chance to visit with friends and family you may not get to see often, so of course you want to look your best.  Knowing where to start can often prove to be a challenge.  Here are some of our favorite shapes, silhouettes and details this year!
::Favorite Fresh Details::
Open back . Cut Out . Lace . Patterns . Midi Length
::FLORALS::
Large scale floral prints are making a big statement across all silhouettes this year.  We love the fresh patterns for a summery, feminine feel.  Pair with metallic or nude strappy heels.
Wedding Season - Floral
::SLEEK & FITTED::
Above the knee or the new midi length; strapless, sheath or shift.  A classic fit to show off your shape.  Try in a graphic print or with a feminine open back.
Wedding Season - Fitted
::SWINGY SLIP DRESS::
A light and airy feel for summer and a nod to the 70’s vibe we’re seeing so much this spring.  Go for a shorter length and show off those stems!
Wedding Season - Swingy Slip Dress
::FIT & FLARE::
A flattering shape across all figures!  It gives that hour glass shape.
Wedding Season - Fit & Flare
::JUMPSUITS::
We’re going crazy for all of the amazing jumpsuits out there this season.  Why not mix things up and choose one over a dress?!  With gorgeous details like open backs and plunging necklines, pair with a sleek heel and statement earrings and you are sure to wow.
Wedding Season - Jumpsuit
::MATCHING SEPARATES::
Another look worthy of a second glance this season is the “2 piece dress” or “matching separates”.  Most have a high waisted skirt paired with a slightly cropped top to give a peek of the midriff, but if you’re not quite comfortable showing skin, there are “faux” options too!  A fun fresh alternative to a traditional dress.  Go simple with accessories and shoes and let the top and skirt make the statement.
Wedding Season - separates
::MAXI::
Always a summer fav, the boho, goddess vibe feels right on this season.  Try a plunging neckline or be sure there is waist detail to give you shape.  You can try a full length, full-bodied skirt as an alternative to give you the same feel!
Wedding Season - Maxi

3 ways to wear it: Jumpsuits

We have talked about jumpsuits and how they’re super stylish this season (thanks in part to the 70’s trend!), and we always recommend them to our clients when we’re talking about things to add to their wardrobe. Partly because they’re trendy, but mostly because they’re really comfortable and versatile!!  However, many of our clients have been nervous to jump onto this trend.  They’re not quite sure how they would incorporate one into their lifestyle!  Well that’s where we come in.  🙂  Here are 3 easy ways to wear a basic black jumpsuit:

Beach chic:
An easy cover-up for those beach (or pool!) days…a panama hat and raffia tote complete the look.

Jumpsuit - beach chic

jumpsuit     ::     hat     ::     flats     ::     tote bag     ::     necklace

Lunch on the patio:
Add flat sandals and a military jacket – easy and chic!

Jumpsuit - lunch on the patio
jumpsuit     ::     jacket     ::     sandals     ::     bag     ::     earrings

Date Night:
All you need is a statement necklace, fun clutch, and a killer pair of heels and you’re good to go!

What do you think about jumpsuits?  How do you wear them?

Getting to Know the Girls of Redress…Continued!

In an effort to make inviting some (friendly looking) strangers in to view/inspect/discuss each and every item in your closet a little less scary, we’re inviting you into our lives and closets!

Last week we shared all about Cara…now get to know Angela!

IMG_8863

Name: Angela Mugler

Hometown: Bexley, Ohio

Family: Husband Jonathan, Kids Luke (8), Annabelle (8), Hudson (6) and Brooks (11 months)

DSC_0566

Tell us about your background in fashion: I began my career in corporate retail in the merchant training program at Abercrombie & Fitch.  My first job was an assistant merchant in women’s sweaters. My hubby and I met on our first day of work!  We moved to San Francisco where I had a short stint at Levis, then a wonderful experience working for Gap Japan.  We made the move back to Columbus when Abercrombie was launching it’s former concept Ruehl No. 925.  I remained in merchandising until I had the opportunity to explore a new world in market research and focus groups.  I loved the fast pace of the fashion world!

IMG_9617

How would you describe your style: Bohemian Chic.  I love pieces that are feminine and sexy but in an subtle, simple way.  I love a short flowy dress, or a drapey top with a pretty lace bralette peeking out.  I would also say I am a bit eclectic.  I like the juxtaposition of mixing feminine and masculine together (ie. a military jacket with a feminine top). I love to accessorize – such an easy way to pull a look together even when you’re on the go (which I always am with 4 kids!).

What is your go-to item in your closet: My Levi’s denim cutoffs.  They are my warm-weather version of skinny denim.  I wear them with everything!  My favorite casual look is a flowy top and strappy sandals, and I wear them at night with a half-tucked silky blouse and metallic heels.

What is the oldest item in your closet: A great pair of slouchy suede knee-high boots I bought from Banana Republic when I was working for Gap (12 years ago!).  They are a light camel color and there isn’t a thing they don’t match.  They are timeless and have held up remarkably well over the years!

What is your spring must-have? A jumpsuit. It’s so effortless and can be easily worn during the day with metallic sandals and a panama hat, or for a night out with wedges or heels and a statement necklace.

What are your favorite places to shop? Zara is one of my all-time favorites.  We don’t have one in Columbus just yet, so every time I travel to New York it is a MUST for me.  With free shipping and returns from online now, I don’t have to wait :).  I also love Madewell, J.Crew, Anthropologie and Shopbop!

What is the best part about being a wardrobe stylist: I love to shop and feel giddy when I find the perfect pieces…pictures flash in my mind with all of the different ways they could be worn.  I love bringing those pieces into someone else’s wardrobe and helping them mix and match to create a bunch of different looks!  The sense of excitement clients feel when they discover all of the new options they have is contagious!

And here’s a look into my closet…

Get to know the girls of ReDress….

If there is one thing we’ve learned after 7 years in business, it’s that style is PERSONAL.

The clothes in your closet are not just clothes.  They’re memories; purchases you bought at points in your life that bring back emotions.  You have sequined dresses from your trip to Vegas.  Old college sweatshirts.  Pants to fit pre-and-post baby bodies.  Your clothes reflected who you were then, and who you are today.  And inviting some strangers in to see and inspect and discuss each and every one of these items – that can be intimidating!  We’re here to tell you that we do not judge, rather we hope to take these sentimental pieces and give them new life!

So, in an effort to take away the stranger-ness, we’d like to introduce ourselves and invite you into our lives and closets.

First up:  Cara

Name: Cara Logsdon

Family: Husband Jeremy, kids Evy (7), Wyatt (5), and Daisy (3)

Logsdon 9photo credit: Danielle Lehman Photography

Tell us about your background in fashion:  I kicked off my retail career as a sales associate at The Gap back in high school!  After college I completed the Executive Development Program at Neiman Marcus and was an assistant buyer in Designer Sportswear.  I then moved to Abercrombie & Fitch and worked in merchandising (women’s and girls knits) and then market research/focus groups, where I met Angela!

How would you describe your style:  Classic and feminine with some trendy elements…yet comfortable and practical.  Being the mom of little ones, I don’t want to worry about ruining my clothes.  I like pieces that are versatile: appropriate to wear walking the kids to school, driving them to sports practices, or going out to dinner at night.  I really just try to buy pieces that are interesting and that I love!

What is your go-to item in your closet:  My Rebecca Minkoff crossbody handbags.  They’re just big enough to hold all my essentials and allow me to keep my hands free since I always seem to be carrying something (or someone)!  When I need to carry a bigger bag I just throw it into a tote and go!

What is the oldest item in your closet:  A denim jacket circa 2001 (!!!).  I was studying in Italy for the summer and left the denim jacket I had brought with me at a train station.  I headed to the nearest Benetton (which seemed to be conveniently located on every street corner) and quickly replaced mine.  It’s a medium wash and a classic fit…and I still wear it today!

What is your spring must-have?  A white eyelet midi skirt.  Stylish, classic, and versatile!  I plan on wearing it dressed down with a nautical striped tee and flat sandals, and dressed up with a silk cami and wedges.  And probably my denim jacket!

What are your favorite places to shop:  Madewell and J.Crew, and since I seem to do a lot of shopping online, Shopbop and Zappos!

What’s the best part about being a wardrobe stylist: Seeing the confidence and excitement on our client’s faces after we complete a closet clean-up.  For many people – no matter how stylish or trendy they are – getting dressed and creating outfits can be stressful.  Knowing that we helped make their lives a little bit easier, or made them feel a little bit better about their their personal style, is very rewarding.

And here’s a look into my closet:

ReDress’ Favorite Things…Spring ’15

It’s that time of year, where all we can think about is what we’ll be wearing all spring and summer long!  We’ve rounded up our favorite things – what we hope will be in constant rotation for the next few months.

When we’re looking to add to our wardrobes, it’s helpful for us to have a plan as to what we want to buy.  So first we’ll start with our closets and ask ourselves the following questions:

1.  What is missing?  Are there any trends that we love that we don’t have yet?

2.  What needs updated?  Any classics that have become worn and could use replacing?

3.  What did we love wearing last year?  Anything we wish we had more of?

Then we’ll shop around in person and online to see if we can find items to fill in the categories we’ve come up with.  But before we buy, we make sure that:

1.  It is versatile (easily dressed up or down!)

2.  It goes with more than one thing in our closet – no impulse buys here, we want to wear our clothes!

3.  We love it!

We go through all of these questions *and more* with you during our Closet Clean-Up…so if you need some help (or a new opinion/eye looking for you!), let us know and we’ll get you on our schedule!

SO…here is what we have found that we love and will wear the most this spring and summer!

Cara’s Favorite Things:

I’m going for classic comfort with some femininity this spring and summer.  Pieces that are light and airy – pastels, lace, crochet, lots of white…and anything that is versatile and effortless.  I’ll play up my accessories and incorporate trends like tassels, fringe, and pom poms in statement pieces.  I’m envisioning long summer days, and these pieces will easily take me from the pool to drinks on the patio!

Cara's Favorite Things Spring '15

Angela’s Favorite Things:

I’m loving the boho-chic vibe of all of the 70’s inspired pieces with swingy silhouettes, large floral prints, and fringe details mixed with a little metallic glam. Distressed denim is a go-to mixed with super feminine flowy tops. Can’t forget a great outerwear piece for rainy spring days!

ReDress Recap…

Hello!

Well it’s been a busy couple of weeks around here!  On top of our closet clean-ups and personal shopping, we’ve been busy launching new services…coordinating Mother’s Day gift boxes…and more!  To bring everyone up to date (and remind you of the fun things we have going on!) we thought a recap post might be helpful.

1.  Last week we helped Erin of Earnest Home Co. pack for her European Vacation in a carry-on.  Yes, 2+ weeks spent in Europe and only wearing what she could fit in a carry-on rolling suitcase!  We love challenges like this. 🙂  Erin was so happy with what we came up with for her (you can read her recap here), and you can see our take on how we came up with what items made the cut here.  Be sure to follow along with her on Instagram (EarnestHomeCo) to see her outfits and the gorgeous European Scenery!  And if you would like our help packing for your next vacation, just email us!

2.  We are super excited about launching our latest service, the Virtual Shopping Experience!!  For our busy/out of town/stylish friends who don’t have time to shop around, we have an answer for you.  With our Virtual Shopping Experience service, we’ll scour the depths of the internet to find you the best and most stylish pieces for YOU and YOUR lifestyle.  We’ll give you visual examples on how to wear what we find, making sure each piece is versatile and will be a piece you wear, love, and feel good in!  The best part is we can work within any budget, and after we send you the links you can buy what you want, when you want (and return what doesn’t work!).

ReDress New Albany

3.  We’re taking ReDress on the road, and our first stop is NEW ALBANY.  We had so much positive feedback from our Night of Style, but realized that not everyone was able to make it on the one night that it was offered.  So, we’re heading to the suburbs and bringing the party to YOU.  If you (or your friends!) live in New Albany, they can enter on our Facebook page to win a Fashion Party with us (just “like” and “tag” your friends!) – we’ll be discussing Spring trends, must-haves for your closet, and our favorite tips when it comes to cleaning out your closet (and believe us, we have a lot!).  We’re also bringing along our ReDress Trunk so you can shop some of our favorite pieces and accessories directly from us!  AND, we’ve decided to bring Carrie from C.Kramer Interiors to talk with you about home trends for Spring and how to update your home decorations for the warmer weather!   Our parties are always such a fun night – so remember if you live in New Albany to comment on our post on Facebook (or you can email us!  ReDressColumbus (at) yahoo.com) to be entered to win this FREE fashion party ($250 value).  But you need to hurry, because we’re closing the contest this MONDAY, April 20th!

ReDress Mothers Day Box

4.  Back by popular demand, we are offering ReDress Mother’s Day Boxes!  We’ll have 2 sizes of boxes this time ($100 & $175), and couldn’t be more thrilled with how they’re coming together.  Each box will be hand picked by US to give to YOU!  This time we’re even throwing in a Barre3 class, a home accessory from Earnest Home Co, and the “Pamper Her” box will have a gift certificate for a spa service at Replenish Spa co-op.  Every box will be accompanied by a chic floral arrangement, and will be wrapped and delivered to your door by Friday May 8th.

From a happy Valentine’s Gift Box recipient: “My husband gave me the ReDress Valentine’s Gift Box and I absolutely loved it!  All of the pieces were really pretty and everything coordinated, even the nail polish!  I really liked that the prints and colors they selected were what is trending this spring.  I would definitely recommend this to my friends and their husbands!”

So ladies, let your husband know what would make you REALLY happy on Mother’s Day this year – a ReDress Mother’s Day Gift Box!  🙂

So now that we’re all caught up, we have even more fun things coming up on our blog: our wish lists for Spring/Summer, getting back to our “3 ways to wear” current trends, and more!

Packing for a two week European vacation…in a carry-on

redress-columbus

When Erin of Earnest Home Co told us she was taking a trip to Europe this spring, we couldn’t have been more jealous.  Walking the streets of Paris, tasting wine in Burgundy, strolling along the beaches of the Italian riviera, and touring historical Rome…sign us up!  And then she told us she was packing for her two week trip entirely in her carry-on.  This sounded like a challenge that had ReDress all over it!  Versatility?  Mixing and Matching?  Maximizing what you have?  We love it!

Before we even met with Erin, we thought about what pieces would give us the most bang for our buck.  What can be worn in a variety of ways, can be dressed up or down by swapping out accessories and shoes, what can be easily packed, and what pieces can be layered in case of changes in weather.  Here are just a few of the items we came up with right off the bat.

Packing essentials

After we had the basic pieces, we talked about how to mix the pieces to make outfits, and took pictures of what we created on Erin’s phone so she could easily reference her outfits while she is abroad.  Just using the pieces above, we could create the following outfits:

Outfit 1: Touring the Museums…..Chambray Shirt + Stripe Skirt

Outfit 2: Date Night Dining…Silk Cami + Stripe Skirt

Outfit 3: Wine Tasting…Graphic Tee + Stripe Skirt + Military Jacket

Outfit 4: Beach Strolling…Silk Cami + Denim Cut-offs + Military Jacket

Outfit 5: Country Hiking…Graphic Tee + Denim Cut-offs + Chambray Shirt

So as you can see, just by using the pieces above (not even including accessories or shoes!) we were able to come up with 5 quick outfits that can work for a range of activities, both dressy and casual.  We added some more items to the mix to include some pants and jeans, dresses, another skirt, a lightweight sweater, and more top options and were able to create 35 outfits, just by mixing and matching!

redress-columbus2

Next we moved on to accessories.  The accessories we wanted her to bring also had to be versatile and really make a statement.  Here are some of the key accessories we came up with.

accessory essentials

These accessories can easily transform any outfit, taking it from day tonight quickly and effortlessly!  Take Outfit 1: Touring the Museums from above.  See how a few accessory swaps can take it from museums to dinner.

Day:  Chambray Shirt + Stripe Skirt + Panama Hat + Sunglasses

Night: Chambray Shirt + Stripe Skirt + Statement Necklace

Luckily accessories don’t take up a lot of space in your carry-on (remember to wear your hat on the plane so it doesn’t get smashed), so we added a few more necklace options to Erin’s packing list, and she was able to expand her outfit options even more!  Accessories will make you feel chic and put together in addition to adding versatility to your wardrobe.  Do NOT forget these!

photo 1(we loved our furry little helper!)

And finally shoes.  This is a hard one, and a place where most people tend to over-pack.  Over-packing was NOT an option for Erin, considering how much space shoes can take up!  Here was our initial suggestion:

shoe essentials

Ankle boots for cooler weather (to be worn on the plane), sneakers for lots of walking, sandals for warmer weather, and one pair of versatile heels.  We ended up having room to add another pair of sandals so Erin could change up her looks even more!

We added a tote bag (to be carried on), a clutch (used inside the tote to hold essentials and then taken out for nighttime use), and a cross-body for all day touring, and we were finished!

photo 2

We loved this challenge of Erin’s, and we think she did to!  You can read about her experience here and follow along with her on instagram (EarnestHomeCo) to see how she wears her outfits in Europe!  Have a great trip, Erin!

Statement jewelry is still a favorite, with fringe and tassels making them feel fresh and updated.  The statement earring has come on strong, with cluster earrings, and earring jackets on the scene. Paired with your LBD or even a plain white tee, these statement pieces can make a look.

Spring ’15 Trend: Denim Report

Next on our Spring Trend list for 2015 we’re showing you the latest denim trends. We know you might not be thinking about pants right now when the weather is getting warmer, but we’ve seen a lot of newness in denim – so if you’re thinking about updating your jeans, go for one of these trends!  Across the board we’re seeing denim washes get lighter.  In line with the 70s trend, we’re seeing flare and high-waisted jeans make a comeback, as well as destroyed and cropped jeans.  White jeans seem to follow both of these trends, and in shorts we’re seeing a lot of destroy and light washes as well!

Spring ’15 Trend: Jumpsuits and Rompers

Our next big trend for Spring ’15 is Jumpsuits and Rompers.  We’ve been talking about these for a few seasons now (we visited them here and here), but what we love about them this year, in addition to going along with the 70s trend, is that they incorporate many of the other spring trends we’ve been talking about: floral prints, tribal, lace/crochet, pastels and whites, etc.  We love how they make an effortless outfit: just throw on and go!

Spring ’15 Trend: Matching Separates

Our next Spring ’15 Trend is Matching Separates.  This is a fun trend, and seems to be the next evolution of the crop top, which we saw pop up on the fashion scene a few seasons ago (we last talked about them here).  We know the crop top is a hard silhouette for most women to wear, but wearing it with a coordinating bottom is a great way to incorporate the trend into your wardrobe!  The crop top is paired with a bottom (skirt – in a mini or midi length or pencil skirt, or even shorts!) in a matching fabric.  The bottoms are usually higher-waisted, which means the crop top doesn’t always have to show your stomach.  We love this look as an alternative to a dress!

Spring '15 Trend: Matching Separates

Going along with matching tops to bottoms is wearing allover denim.  This is something you can create with what you have in your wardrobe (chambray top or denim jacket paired with jeans or jean shorts), or we’re also seeing a lot of denim dresses and rompers!

Spring ’15 Trend: Pastels

Next on our Spring ’15 trend list: Pastels.

The ultimate in feminine and romantic style, we’re loving all of the pastels we’re seeing this spring!  From blush pink to light and minty blue, and lots and lots of white!  We’re seeing a lot of these pastel colors in the floral prints, as well.  And of course it’s in shoes, jewelry, and handbags, too!

Spring ’15 Trend: Tribal

Our next Spring ’15 trend is Tribal. Think of this as geometric prints and earthy materials.  We love how boho and natural it all feels!  You can again find it across all categories: from apparel to accessories to shoes.  The bold colors and patterns are versatile and we can see them carrying you all the way into next fall!

Spring ’15 Trend: 70s Inspired

Our next Spring ’15 trend is 70s Inspired. This trend really covers a lot of the spring trends we will be talking about in the next few weeks – so consider it a preview of trends to come, and a great guideline when shopping for trend updates for your wardrobe!  Like we discussed with floral prints, the 70s trend is a nice change from where we’ve been for the past few seasons.  Pant legs are getting wider (and the waist band has moved up!), we’re seeing flat and platform sandals, tons of jumpsuits and rompers, flowy tops and kimonos, a lot of pattern, crochet and lace, and lots of trim details: fringe, tassels, and pom poms.

Spring ’15 Trend: Floral Prints

Welcome MARCH and welcome SPRING!  When 40 degrees and sunshine feels like heaven, we can’t help but think about SPRING and breaking out all of our spring trends!!

We’re starting our series on Spring Trends ’15…kicking it off with FLORAL PRINTS.  They’re romantic, feminine, come in soft colors, and are big in scale.  They are a welcome change from the neutral and masculine silhouettes and prints we saw for fall and winter!  They come in just about any shape and style: tops, dresses, pants, shorts, skirts, rompers, jumpsuits, and of course you can always go for an accessory if you’re not big on wearing prints!  We love them because they can be dressed up with heels and statement jewelry, or down with jeans, sandals, and a military or denim jacket.  Find a print you love and be prepared to wear it all season long!

Maximize your Wardrobe: White Jeans

It’s about the time of year when we start dreaming of Summer…or at least escaping from the cold and going somewhere warm!  But as this week’s snow so boldly reminded us – it is still January, and we have months of cold weather left!  Soon stores will start selling their resort collections, and seeing all the resort wear while we still have several months left of winter can leave us frustrated with our wardrobes.  (Around now is when the “I have nothing to wear!” complaints start coming in…)
SO, it’s time to start getting creative!  We’re all about versatility and maximizing what we have, so we’re bringing back out the white jean.  You all know we wear them year round (and have blogged about them HERE and HERE), and today we’re showing 3 new outfits centered around them.  They feel fresh and spring-like, but when paired with heavy fabrics and layers, feel just as chic for the middle of winter.  See if you can bring out your white jeans and wear them this week!

Friday Find – A Must Have Shoe

Golden Globes stuart weitzman sandal

We love watching the awards shows and ogling over the gorgeous dresses and accessories (who doesn’t?!).  We often see and talk about dress trends (women showed up to the Golden Globes in gorgeous bold colors and silver sparkles!), but this season there is a shoe that seems to keep reappearing.  It’s the Stuart Weitzman “Nudist” sandal.  It has a thin toe and ankle strap, elongates legs, looks chic, and there is a color and texture to go with just about anything.  Who What Wear mentioned it as a “Must-Have Shoe” last JULY, and it’s still sticking around this season!

Stuart Weitzman Nudist

At $398, you could consider it an investment shoe, and probably get your money’s worth with how much you can wear it with!  But if that’s too much for you, try out the Steve Madden “Stecy” for $79.95 – it looks almost exactly the same, and has a bunch of color and texture options as well.

Do any of you have this shoe?  What color did you pick?

Dressing For the Weather: Winter Chic

Welcome to 2015…and to winter weather!

We often get questions about coats and how to dress for the weather without sacrificing style.  We visited cold weather outfits last year (and rainy day outfits), so we thought we’d visit it again this winter!

We feel that there are so many interesting and beautiful coats out there, so why play it safe with a basic black peacoat?  If your coat is covering up your outfit, do NOT feel that you need to match your coat with what you’re wearing that day.  Try an interesting fabric (shiny puffer coats, wool, fur), shapes (long, short, and capes!), or color (neutrals such as grey, navy or brown, or colors – even pastels!).  And to go with your coat there are endless accessories.  Fur hats and headbands, beautiful scarves, and warm weather boots with shearling and fur details.  And don’t forget earrings or watches or bracelets…all things that can still be seen when you’re bundled up!

Here are some winter chic looks to inspire  you as you bundle up for the cold weather!

Dedicated Post: Game Day Chic

Wondering how you can sport the most fashionable game day look while cheering on your favorite team?  Here is a little inspiration!  Regardless of your team’s colors, if you pair them with neutrals, textures, layers and even a bit of pattern mixing, it will be a winning combination.  We chose a Peyton Manning jersey of the Denver Broncos (my family’s favorite team), to pair with grey skinny jeans, comfy slip on sneakers, a cozy chunky cardigan and a chic neutral plaid scarf.  Remember layers always add visual interest, and mixing sporty/masculine with feminine/chic balances out the look!
To recreate this look for your next game day party, start by finding your team’s jersey at Fanatics.com.

Flippy Skirt: 3 Ways to Work it

With all of the sporty and menswear silhouettes out in stores right now, it’s fun to find a feminine piece that you can mix in with these trends to give your outfit a girly touch. This is why we love the flippy skirt. It’s fitted at the waist and hips, but at the bottom it ruffles or “flips” out. We’ve seen it in colors, neutrals, textures, tweeds, even sweatshirt fabrics. It will be a piece that you can dress up or down, and is a great option if you’re looking to add a new skirt into your wardrobe this season. Here are 3 ways to wear the flippy skirt.

Sporty:

Take your sweatshirt and throw it on with ankle boots and some fun accessories for a casual look.

Casual:
A basic tee or sweater, your denim jacket, and a plaid scarf is an easy and casual way to wear your skirt.

Sweatshirt: 3 Ways to Work It

Now that we’ve introduced you to fall’s biggest trends, it’s time to show you how versatile they can be!  This week we’ll begin our “3 ways to work it” series, highlighting our favorite fall pieces.  With sporty being the favorite of designers and brands across the board as of late, we chose the sweatshirt for today’s key piece.  Options are a plenty and it’s soft, cozy and comfy.  We like all of the neutrals, with greys, black, white and cream looking clean and sophisticated. Choose a kitchy phrase or a vintage looking graphic – go with whatever speaks to you!

Accessories Report: Fall ’14

We often tell our clients how key accessories are to an outfit, and this season they seem extra important. With all the simple silhouettes and neutral colors, adding a statement accessory is what will set your outfit apart!  Here are some of our favorites:

Plaid Scarves: Going along with the menswear/plaid trend, these scarves add warmth, color and pattern to your outfit.

Statement Necklaces: The statement necklace is nothing new, but we still love it!  We’re seeing a lot of mixed metals, art deco inspired detailing, and bold jewels.

Statement Earrings: We love how earrings are making a comeback, and are now colorful and big, and a bit more unexpected than the statement necklace.  We love the femininity they add to any outfit, and how they show even when you’re bundled up in your winter coat and hat!

Accessories Report: Fall '14

On to hats and handbags!

Hats:  They are a great and often overlooked accessory!  There are many options now (and not just for cold weather).  Try a fedora with your outfit for a chic way to stay warm.  And wear a knit beanie or turban headband on the coldest (or not-so-cold) days of the year to add interest and cover up those bad hair days!

Handbags:  Try a satchel for a daytime bag (they have top handles and often a cross body strap as well!) or a clutch for evening – but not in basic black!  Look for a standout print or detail (animal print! metallic foils!).

Shoe Guide: Fall 2014

Fall Shoes

Boots and boots and boots and boots!  And why not?  They are perfectly practical for the cooler weather that is upon us, and it’s not every day chic fashion and practicality find common ground.  They’ve taken just about every form possible and can work on your most casual days and your fanciest nights out….Ankle boots, riding boots, over-the-knee boots, moto boots and booties.  Take your pick…or 2 or 3.

Pointy toes in heels and flats are still ever present, along with various animal prints to wear with absolutely everything.  We’re seeing “cage” heels and lace-ups as the fresh, new silhouettes.  In keeping with the booming sporty trend, lots of sneakers are on the scene, from high-tops to slip ons and everything in between.

The shoe completes the look so don’t always go for the “safe choice”…  be bold, have fun and show some personality!

Sweaters: Fall ’14

Maybe it’s because of the winter we had last year, but we are excited to see so many Sweaters around this season!  For several years we have seen blazers as the trendy layering piece, (don’t worry, blazers haven’t disappeared completely!) but this year the newest 3rd piece is the sweater.   Lots of chunky, cozy knits in both cardigans and pullovers.  Perfect to throw on with skinny jeans and boots or dress up with leather leggings and heels for a night out.  Don’t forget to accessorize!

Leopard: Fall ’14

Guess what: Leopard is back again for Fall. Isn’t it always? And we LOVE it!

If you don’t have any leopard in your closet, now is the time to buy.  You know we think of it as a neutral: pair it with solid colors, stripes, florals, plaids, really anything!  It will instantly make your outfit.  If you’re still not into pattern in your wardrobe, try it in a shoe or handbag.  We know you’ll love it!

Crop Tops: Fall ’14

We know you all must be so excited: Crop Tops are back for another season!

Don’t be afraid of this shorter, boxier silhouette.  You don’t have to bear your midriff in order to sport this style.  We love it when worn with high-waisted skirt or pants, with just a hint of skin.  Or layer a longer tank under it if you’re not feeling so bold – you still will have the same overall look.  Try it dressy with a coordinating skirt or casual in a knit or sweater fabric.

Leather: Fall ’14

Just like the sporty trend, Leather is sticking around for another season!

You can find leather (or faux leather) in all silhouettes: jackets, tops, dresses, leggings, etc.  But we love the leather detail that we’re seeing across all silhouettes this season.  Elbow patches, neckline trims, pockets – you can find leather as a detail on just about anything, transforming even a simple top or dress into something chic and trendy (and without the big price tag).

Sporty: Fall ’14

Sticking around for another season is the Sporty trend.

You all know we loved our soft pants and sweatshirts last year so we’re so glad they’re back again for Fall.  Styles this season have gone beyond just the sporty detail (raglan sleeves, banded necklines and hems, hoods, etc) into full-on sport attire: numbers on sweatshirts, logos, sneakers, and backpacks are everywhere.  But we also love the mixing of sporty and feminine, and are seeing it all in one piece (for example, the JCrew leather front sweatshirt or Haute Hippie sweatshirt dress with feathers and embellishments below).  As we said with menswear: don’t forget to add some femininity into your look when sporting the sporty trend!

Plaid: Fall ’14

Taking the Menswear trend even further, plaid is huge this fall! You can find it in any silhouette: shirts, sweaters, coats, skirts, dresses, and of course, accessories.  We love how plaid can make even the simplest of silhouettes interesting.

Menswear: Fall ’14

We are starting our blog series on Fall Trends! These posts will hopefully inspire you as you take inventory of your fall wardrobe and start shopping for cold weather clothes.

First up: Menswear!

Think structured silhouettes (blazers, trousers, button down shirts), colors (darks and neutrals), patterns (houndstooth, pinstripes, and plaids) and fabrics (wool blazers or pants and woven shirts).  We love this mixed in with some femininity: add a statement necklace or a sassy heel to keep it from feeling too masculine.  If you’re just easing into this trend, try it in an accessory: oxford shoes (or a houndstooth pattern on a flat!), plaid scarves, and big watches are a great place to start!

Family Photo Styling Service

We are coming on September, the most beautiful time of year almost every where in the world!  Fall is undoubtedly the most beautiful time of year for outdoor photos, and therefore the busiest for family photographers.  Capturing a moment in time with your family on film is an important piece of capturing history!  If you’re anything like us, we take tons of pictures of our kids, but rarely get to be in any with them.  Once you’ve decided to make the investment in a family photo shoot, then comes the stress of what to wear?!  Picking your own outfit to be photographed in can be difficult enough, but coordinating looks for the entire family, that compliment each other without matching exactly…that can be downright daunting.
